Polystyrene Packaging's Evolving Role in a Sustainable World

For decades, polystyrene packaging has been a ubiquitous material, valued for its exceptional insulating properties and low cost. From protecting electronics during shipping to keeping food warm or cold, its lightweight and rigid structure has made it a go-to choice for a wide array of applications. This type of packaging, often seen in its expanded form (EPS), which is commonly known as Styrofoam, is a product of its unique ability to be molded into complex shapes, providing superior shock absorption and moisture resistance.

However, the material's traditional place in the packaging industry has been challenged by growing environmental concerns. The push for a circular economy has led to a major industry focus on recyclability and the use of recycled content. Many companies are now actively seeking out alternatives or innovating to make polystyrene more sustainable.

A key player in this evolving landscape is Amcor. While much of Amcor's recent innovation has focused on other materials like flexible and fiber-based packaging, the company's broader sustainability goals are impacting all of its product lines. In a recent research report, Amcor revealed that European consumers are strongly influenced by recyclability claims, with 84% checking on-pack instructions. This consumer preference is driving Amcor's strategy to develop more recyclable and sustainable solutions across its portfolio. Amcor's commitment to using recycled content and developing new, more sustainable materials like its AmFiber™ line demonstrates a clear move toward a future where all packaging, including polystyrene, is part of a more circular system.
